The UK’s ‘duty of care’ to its armed forces, known as the military covenant, is a longstanding pact ensuring support for service members and veterans. Despite provisions for healthcare, housing, and bereavement support, many veterans struggle after leaving the military. In 2007, an estimated 10% of discharged personnel faced poverty and homelessness, prompting the rise of over 230 veteran aid charities. Criticism of the government’s treatment of troops escalated, with high-profile resignations and public statements about neglect. Initiatives like Veterans Day, later merged into Armed Forces Day, were introduced to honor veterans. ALJAZEERA'S People & Power follows Stuart Griffiths, a veteran-turned-photographer, as he documents the struggles of those who feel the government is failing its duty of care.
